Bail kept at $63,000 for man accused in shooting

WAILUKU — A judge kept bail at $63,000 Friday for a Pukalani man who was arrested after allegedly shooting his girlfriend 17 times with an air rifle.

Bryan Planesi, 19, has pleaded not guilty to 17 counts of second-degree assault, 13 counts of abuse and one count of felony abuse in the Oct. 7 incident at a residence on Hanalani Street.

That day, Planesi and his girlfriend argued over relationship issues when Planesi allegedly picked up a black air rifle and shot his girlfriend 17 times, said Deputy Prosecutor Annalisa Bernard Lee. She said Planesi then mounted his girlfriend and allegedly strangled her, causing her to pass out for two to three minutes.

Police reported the woman had 17 welts on her left arm, left hand, left side of her stomach and outer portion of her left leg.

Bernard Lee asked that bail be maintained for Planesi. He had sought a reduction in bail, with Deputy Public Defender Zach Raidmae saying Planesi has no prior criminal record.

Second Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo maintained bail at $63,000.

In another case, Planesi is charged with second-degree assault, felony abuse and eight counts of abuse of his girlfriend Oct. 12. According to police, the couple were arguing when Planesi bit his girlfriend’s bottom lip. He also picked her up by the waist and slammed her to the ground before grabbing her by the throat and squeezing, police said.

His bail is set at $36,000 in that case. Planesi is being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
