Bumper-to-bumper traffic on Haleakala Highway
State highway work at North Firebreak Road bottled up traffic on Haleakala Highway between Central Maui and Upcountry on Friday morning and afternoon, according to police. Vehicles in bumper-to-bumper traffic are shown clearing the way for an emergency vehicle. It was taking vehicles as long as an hour to go from Pukalani to Kahului at about 1 p.m., according to a motorist. The state Department of Transportation Highways Division website shows a resurfacing project on Haleakala Highway from Hana Highway to North Firebreak Road. The $3.4 million project, which also includes resurfacing of Hana Highway from Haleakala Highway to Paia, is 79 percent complete. The estimated completion date is next month.
