Firefighters douse three brush fires
Maui firefighters extinguished three brush fires along Honoapiilani Highway around midday Wednesday, Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto reported.
Passing motorists called firefighters at 11:53 a.m. to report at least two separate fires on the makai side of the road between McGregor Point and the pali scenic lookout, he said. Kahului fire crews arrived at 12:04 and found a strip of grass 100 feet long and 10 feet wide burning west of McGregor Point.
A Wailuku fire crew found a 20-by-20-foot grass fire a few hundred yards west of the first blaze, Taomoto said.
A third fire was discovered several hundred yards west of the second fire, and it was quickly put out by another Wailuku crew in a mini-pumper truck, he said. That fire also covered a 20-by-20-foot area.
Firefighters had not determined the cause of the fires as of Wednesday evening. The fires were extinguished by 12:40 p.m.
Traffic on Honoapiilani Highway was not stopped, but it was slowed while fire crews worked, Taomoto said.
