Haiku woman dies in single-car crash

A 77-year-old Haiku woman died after the car she was driving went off the road, up a dirt embankment and hit a tree Tuesday afternoon, police said.

She was identified as Maryvonne Kosatschkow.

The crash occurred at 3:14 p.m. on Kauhikoa Road north of Mai Place in Haiku.

Police said Kosatschkow was driving a red 2001 Volkswagen Passat four-door sedan that was heading north down Kauhikoa Road when it went left of center at a bend in the road. The car went into the opposing lane before leaving the roadway on the opposite shoulder, going up a dirt embankment and stopping after it hit a tree, police said.

Kosatschkow was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.

A preliminary investigation showed she wasn’t wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.

The traffic death was the 12th this year on Maui County roads, compared with 13 at the same time last year.
