Heavy showers forecast

Locally heavy passing showers are forecast through the weekend triggered by an approaching upper-level trough from the north, the National Weather Service said in a special weather statement.

Strengthening trade winds will bring moisture over the state from the east, which will interact with the trough. The trough was expected to destabilize the atmosphere over Maui on Thursday night or today, the statement said. The trade winds will focus more of the rain over windward and mauka sections but some showers may reach leeward areas.

At 3:50 p.m. Thursday, a flash-flood warning was issued for the island of Maui through 6:45 p.m. after a gauge on Kahakuloa Stream reported a rapid rise in water levels which had the potential of overflowing onto Kahekili Highway, according to the National Weather Service.

Trade winds will strengthen over the weekend with showers tapering off late Sunday as the moisture moves west of the state and the trough heads northeast, the statement said. Winds are expected to blow 15 to 25 mph today and Saturday from the east.

Breezy trade winds will remain into early next week as an area of high pressure remains north of Hawaii.

As of 1 p.m. Thursday, a half-inch of rain fell in Hana and at East Wailuaiki in East Maui over the previous 24 hours and 1.4 inches fell in Puu Kukui in the West Maui Mountains.

High temperatures today are expected to be between 83 and 88 degrees with lows from 74 to 79 degrees today and Saturday. The high temperature Thursday at Kahului Airport was 91 degrees, and it was muggy with humidity in the 70 percent range in the afternoon.
