Parks department to host open-house sessions
A series of interactive open-house sessions will be held next week to address parks and recreation facility needs, the county announced Thursday.
The sessions are part of a parks department project to prepare a system plan, which will define future recreation needs, an overall strategy and specific capital improvements. The sessions are organized by district and will cover two areas: overall district needs and ideas for parks and facilities and aquatics facilities.
The schedule for the sessions follows:
• West Maui, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kaunoa Senior Center.
• Upcountry, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.
• Central Maui, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the War Memorial Complex, Parks Meeting Room, in Wailuku.
• South Maui, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Kenolio Recreation Center in Kihei.
Meetings for Molokai, Lanai and Hana will be scheduled for later dates.
The open-house sessions will allow participants to offer ideas to improve parks, facilities and programs; suggest the kinds of parks that are needed in each district; review options for improving county aquatic facilities; and speak with project consultants and parks department staff.
Participants can attend anytime during the two-and-a-half hour window. There will be no formal presentation, but there will be four to five stations where people can write comments and speak with staff.
After the open-house sessions, department staff and the consultant team will prepare draft plans for all of the districts. An aquatics facilities plan also will be prepared to analyze existing pools, recommend improvements and describe costs for staffing and maintenance. The plan will include implementation and funding options.
