* Navy training. The U.S. Navy sought to clarify comments made by officials in a Nov. 8 story about a hearing on Maui about the Navy expanding its no-sonar-testing zone. Explosives are not used in the Maui basin. If a Navy vessel sees marine mammals, it stays within a certain distance and shuts down when necessary to protect the animal. Humpback whale populations have increased specifically due to federal protections such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act.
