A pickup truck plummeted about 60 feet down a cliff in a two-vehicle collision on Honoapiilani Highway on Monday afternoon that killed a back-seat passenger in a multipurpose vehicle, police said.
The crash occurred at 2:58 p.m. near Mile Marker 8 in Maalaea.
A white 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling north on Honoapiilani Highway when it veered off the roadway onto the mauka shoulder and hit the guardrail, police said. The Toyota truck then returned to the roadway and crossed the centerline to collide head-on with a gray 2011 Scion XB multipurpose vehicle that was heading south on the highway, police said.
Then the truck launched over the makai guardrail, plummeting down the side of the cliff, police said.
The 34-year-old Lahaina man driving the Toyota pickup was carried up the cliff by firefighters and police, officials said. He was transported in critical condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room. Police said he wasn’t wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision.
The 39-year-old Kahului woman driving the Scion was transported to the hospital in fair condition, police said. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the collision, police said.
The back-seat passenger in the Scion was transported to the hospital emergency room in critical condition and later died, police said. He was identified as 66-year-old Manuel R. Rivera of Kahului.
The traffic death was the third this month and the 16th this year on Maui County roads, compared with 21 at the same time last year.
