High surf advisory in effect for today

A high-surf advisory has been posted for east-facing shores of Molokai and Maui through 6 p.m. today, the National Weather Service said.

Surf is expected to rise to 10 to 14 feet overnight into Friday and gradually fall over the weekend. High surf and higher than normal ocean levels are causing the high surf, which may wash onto coastal roadways during high tide this morning, the weather service said.

The surf also could produce beach erosion and rip currents.

The forecast for Maui today is partly cloudy with scattered showers in windward and mountain areas and mostly sunny with isolated showers in leeward areas.

High temperatures are expected to be between 83 and 88 degrees with lows between 70 and 75 degrees.

Trade winds are expected to blow 15 to 20 mph.
