High surf expected for north shores

Surf as high as 20 to 30 feet is expected to hit north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai today, leading to the posting of a high-surf warning until 6 a.m. Friday.

The warning by the National Weather Service covers north- and east-facing shores of Molokai and Maui.

A strong low-pressure system in the northeast Pacific Ocean has generated a large north swell, which will peak into today then slowly decline tonight and into Friday, the weather service said.

The surf is expected to hit 10 to 15 feet along east-facing shores.

A high-surf warning means that dangerous waves will pound the shoreline. There will be dangerous swimming conditions as well as deadly rip currents, the weather service said.
