Medicare to be topic of Wednesday event

AARP speaker and veterans advocate Bill Staton will discuss Medicare during a free event hosted by District 12 of the Democratic Party of Maui from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Pukalani Pool Multipurpose Room.

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people ages 65 and older and the disabled. Eligibility guidelines are based on those for Social Security.

Medicare helps pay hospitalization charges, for stays in skilled nursing facilities, for physicians’ charges and for some associated health costs. There are limits on the length of stay and type of care.

“Medicare provides retiree health care for most Americans,” the event announcement says. “We pay into it our entire working lives so that it will be there when we retire, but it can sometimes be challenging for people who are used to employer-sponsored health care plans to understand.”

Staton’s presentation is expected to include an overview of the different parts of Medicare, what is covered and the costs; an overview of the different types of Medicare plans; and resources and tools for more information.

The event is part of a speaker series hosted by District 12.
