Akiko Tanimoto adds powdered tea leaves to a cup of hot water during Wednesday’s traditional Japanese memorial tea ceremony in honor of Hideko Zwick at Roselani Place in Kahului. The Kenchashiki was conducted by members of Chado Urasenke Tankokai Maui Association, of which Tanimoto serves as president. The association meets every month to practice the way of tea under the motto of “Peacefulness through a bowl of tea.” Zwick, who taught ikebana, or Japanese flower arranging, while living at Roselani Place, died April 8. Her husband, Edward Zwick, was presented a bowl of tea during the ceremony, which organizers said drew several times more people than they expected. Dr. Bruce Purvis explained the intricacies of the humble ceremony while serving as emcee. Koko Wolbe played the koto.
