Single-vehicle crash kills Kihei woman
A 21-year-old Kihei woman died after the pickup truck she was driving climbed a curve and hit a tree in Wailea on Sunday night, police said.
She was identified as Rhendie Hepa.
Police said the crash occurred at 7:07 p.m. on Wailea Alanui Drive north of Malukai Lane.
The blue 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was heading north on Wailea Alanui Drive when it hit the raised curb on the makai shoulder while negotiating a right curve in the roadway, police said. Then the truck climbed the curb and hit a tree, police said.
Hepa was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room in critical condition and later died from her injuries, police said.
Preliminary investigation showed she wasn’t wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.
The traffic death was the 15th on Maui County roads this year, compared with 21 at the same time last year.
