Wailuku man dies in truck crash

A 34-year-old Wailuku man died after the truck he was driving veered off Waiehu Beach Road, hitting a light pole and rock wall early Thursday, police said.

The driver was identified as John Anken.

The crash occurred at 3:23 a.m. on Waiehu Beach Road west of Kealii Drive.

Police said Anken was driving a gray 2004 Ford Ranger pickup truck east on Waiehu Beach Road when the truck veered off the roadway and onto the makai shoulder, hitting a metal light pole. After hitting the light pole, the truck continued to travel on the shoulder across Kealii Drive, where it struck a rock wall, police said.

Anken was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

While police investigated the crash, Waiehu Beach Road was closed between Kuhio Place and Makaala Drive. The road reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

The traffic death was the 14th this year on Maui County roads, compared with 19 at the same time last year.
