Application period begins for 2018 county park usage

The county Department of Parks and Recreation will start accepting applications Tuesday for the use of county facilities during the summer 2018 season.

The process is part of the county’s new triennial permit process, which requires leagues and recreational programs to apply for county facilities months before each season begins. The county has said that the new system will be more efficient than the year-round system, which sometimes resulted in facilities getting overbooked. The new process will affect requests for the majority of facilities countywide, including athletic fields, multipurpose fields, ball fields, courts, pools and gymnasiums.

The department will accept application requests from 8 a.m. Tuesday until 4 p.m. Jan. 12 for the summer season, which lasts from April 16 to July 31. Any applications not received in person or via email by 4 p.m. Jan. 12 will not be considered in the triennial process. Applicants who miss the application window may submit standard permit applications on a first-come, first-served basis beginning March 5, space permitting.

Under the new system, the community will have three windows each year to apply for county facilities:

• To reserve for the summer season from April 16 to July 31, applications must be submitted during the first two weeks of January.

• To reserve for the fall season from Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, applications must be submitted during the first two weeks of May, or May 1 to 14 next year.

• To reserve for the winter/spring season from Jan. 1 to April 15, applications must be submitted during the first two weeks in October, or Oct. 2 to 13 next year.

The county said the new process will not impact permit application requests for camping, community centers or annual special events.

Application packets will be available at all department permit offices and online at mauicounty.gov/parks. Applications will be reviewed in the priority order outlined in the department’s administrative rules, also available at mauicounty.gov/parks.

For more information, contact the department’s permit office at 270-7389 or send email to DPRPermits@mauicounty.gov. For general parks information, visit mauicounty.gov/parks.
