Children receive bicycles

Five-year-old Umi Juan of Kihei receives a new bike as part of the 2017 Maui Toys 4 Tots Motorcycle Toy Run at the Azeka Shopping Center on Dec. 10. The timing was perfect for father Fernando Juan, who said that his three children had all outgrown their old bikes. Fifteen bicycles were given out at the event, with another 25 handed out later. More than 350 motorcycles and 40 classic cars participated in the toy run that started in Kihei and went to Lahaina, collecting more than 3,000 toys, said Ron Panzo, president of the Maui chapter of Street Bikers United. Domonic Evans and Vanessa Schell said that sons Carter Wayne, 4, and Domonic Evans Jr., 2, received their first-ever bikes at the event. The family moved to Maui a few months ago and “money has been tight,” Schell said. “Christmas is right around the corner, and we were concerned about making sure they have a good one,” she said. “It makes me feel relieved they get something — and something they can use for a long time.” In the second photo, bikers prepare to head out to Lahaina.
