Exhibit is ‘Beautiful’

Jack Hazen of Makawao contemplates a pair of paintings by Shirley Russell while taking in the “He Makana: The Gertrude Mary Joan Damon Haig Collection of Hawaiian Art” exhibit at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Schaefer International Gallery last week. The distinguished collection of paintings, prints and traditional art forms of Hawaii from the 1890s to the 1970s include early 20th century works by Lionel Walden, D. Howard Hitchcock and Madge Tennent. Russell’s painting on the left is titled “Windward Oahu,” while on the right is “Hawaiian Flowers: A Still Life.” “It’s beautiful,” Hazen said of the exhibit. The 95-year-old WWII veteran and metal artist was viewing the exhibit with his wife, Lorna. The exhibit runs through Dec. 23 with the gallery open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
