Information sought in Kihei kidnapping attempt

Police are asking for the public’s help in the investigation of an attempted kidnapping of a student Wednesday afternoon at Kihei Elementary School.

A girl was approached by a man she didn’t know between 1:15 and 1:25 p.m., police said. The man told the girl he was there to pick her up from school because her mother was ill.

The student ran back to the school and told an adult.

The man was described as about 40 years old, 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds. He had short black hair with brown tips and a light beard. The man also had a scar on his right cheek and spoke with a slight accent, possibly Filipino.

He was wearing jeans, an orange shirt and sunglasses.

The man left in a red four-door sedan with the two rear windows covered with grayish-colored sheets. The two front windows were tinted. The car was described to having damage to its headlight and taillight.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 244-6400, or 911 in an emergency.

Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call Maui Crime Stoppers at 242-6966.

Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of people responsible for felony crimes.
