Kihei’s Kevin MacInnis makes a pass close to the ground with his Indian fighting kite last week at Kalama Park in Kihei. “They’re very maneuverable,” MacInnis said of his single-line kites. “I can fly low, fly high and I get exercise. The way the winds change, I can be all over this field.” He said he started learning about kites when he and his brother were recruited to join the Northwest Fighter Kite Association in Tacoma in 1997. As the small club grew and the intensity of competition increased, MacInnis said he drifted away, but never lost his love of flying the small nimble kites.
