Maui girl awarded full ride to MIT

Maui High School senior Laney Flanagan has been offered a full four-year scholarship and admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She obtained the award through QuestBridge’s “College Match” program. QuestBridge is a national nonprofit based in Palo Alto, Calif. It connects the nation’s most exceptional, low-income youths with leading colleges and opportunities, its website says.

The scholarship includes tuition, room and board and other expenses.

MIT selected seven students, according to an announcement.

From a pool of 15,606 applicants, from which QuestBridge chose 5,759 as finalists, 918 students have been selected as this year’s College Match Scholarship Recipients.

Laney is the daughter of Holly Henson of Kihei. She was on the Sabers’ soccer and judo teams, the Math League teams and is captain of the Science and Ocean Sciences bowl teams. She is a National Merit semifinalist.

She volunteers at the Maui Humane Society and tutors at a neighboring elementary school.
