Weather conditions shut down parts of park

Haleakala National Park officials shut down the park road at the 8,000-foot Kalahaku Overlook in the summit district Friday morning because of black ice brought by below-freezing temperatures, park spokeswoman Pauline Angelakis said.

And gates to the Summit District were closed Friday night due to heavy rain and icy conditions until conditions become safe again, she said at 8:15 p.m.

Earlier in the day at around 9 a.m., the temperature was 29 degrees with limited visibility at the summit, but there was no snow, she said. By 9:20 a.m., the road had reopened, she said, adding that it was closed for 30 to 45 minutes.

Black ice forms at times, and the occurrence Friday morning stemmed from rainfall, below-freezing temperatures and wind chill, Angelakis said.

On Friday afternoon, a winter storm warning was issued for the Haleakala summit through noon today.

The National Weather Service forecast for Halekala today is for cloudy skies and numerous rain showers with possible snow, freezing rain and thunderstorms likely in the morning and numerous rain showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. High temperatures will be from 40 to 42 degrees.
