First photo: Deborah Davis (from left), James Vitale and 9-year-old Chloe Davis of Makawao hang ornaments on a tree at Wailuku Union Church on Dec. 17 during the 22nd annual memorial tree trimming held by Heaven Sent, a support group for bereaved parents. “This starts our holiday every year,” said Deborah Davis, whose 21-year-old son, Jonathan Davis, died in a motorcycle crash in January 2009 when his daughter, Chloe, was barely a month old. “It starts us thinking we’re not alone.”

Second photo: The Medeiros family — Tommy (from left), Lori, Shirley Ann, 6-year-old Mikey, 17-year-old Jared and Lori’s sister Cheryl Gower — release butterflies outside the church in memory of Lori’s 2-month-old daughter, Jamielynn Miyazono, who died in a car crash in 1999. “We do our own thing at home, but it’s nice to share with others that have lost too,” she said.
