Coast Guard looking for owner of kayak found at Maliko Gulch

The U.S. Coast Guard is seeking the public’s help in identifying the owner of a green kayak found on the rocks near Maliko Gulch on Friday.

At 12:18 p.m., watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a report of an unmanned kayak on the rocks near Maliko Gulch from a man flying a drone.

A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, Oahu, was launched to search the area. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu also issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast notice to mariners to keep a sharp lookout for mariners in distress.

There currently are no reports of missing people in the area, the Coast Guard said.

Anyone with information that may help identify the owner of the kayak is asked to contact Sector Honolulu at (808) 842-2600.

It is recommended that owners of watersports equipment write their name and phone number on their gear. Identification will allow responders to quickly identify the vessel’s owner and aid search-and-rescue planners in determining the best course of action, the Coast Guard said.
