Community meeting set to get input on Pulehunui development project
The Maui News – A community informational meeting on the Pulehunui regional infrastructure master plan will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lihikai Elementary School in Kahului.
The event is meant to gather public input for the project’s environmental impact statement. The school is at 335 S. Papa Ave.
The state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is preparing the master plan. It will include an analysis of infrastructure needed for the development, such as water, wastewater and roadways. Plans call for developing light industrial, commercial and agricultural uses in Pulehunui across from the old Puunene armory on Maui Veterans Highway, formerly known as Mokulele Highway.
Leases would generate income for the project, which would have retail stores, agribusiness processing, packaging and/or marketing of agricultural goods produced at Pulehunui South and throughout Central Maui.
Project plans were detailed in the Dec. 23 edition of The Environmental Notice. Public comments are due by Jan. 22.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has plans for a separate, 285-acre business park next to the armory.
Up to 140 acres at Pulehunui North and about 35 acres at Pulehunui South would be used for commercial and industrial purposes. Large, contiguous commercial lots would be suitable for a “comprehensive commercial or retail complex” and/or possibly a “visitor attraction destination, cultural center or other large visitor industry-based use.”
