Fundraiser set to send students to class in Philippines

Immersion program will offer 4 students a global experience

The Maui News – University of Hawaii Maui College will be holding a fundraising dinner at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Leis Family Class Act Restaurant on campus to help four students participate in an inaugural program to study in the Philippines.

The International Mobility, or I.M., Ready immersion program aims to empower students by providing them opportunities to gain global experiences, expand their network and build lasting relationships beyond the islands of Maui County, a news release said. The students will be attending classes at top universities in the Philippines.

The students will be introduced at the dinner. They are:

• Alickzander Pasalo, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in sustainable science management. He plans to attain a master’s degree in either business or planning with a focus on sustainability. He is interested in learning about different farming techniques to help grow his family’s farm. He served in the Hawaii Army National Guard for six years and currently works as a technical services student assistant at the college library.

• Princess Cainguitan, who is a hospitality and tourism management student with plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in applied business and information technology. She practices judo, performs Filipino dances at community events and works in a local restaurant.

• Sam Peralta is a Hawaiian studies major, a community leader and activist. He is president of UH-Maui College’s Filipino student organization, the Kabatak Club. He is an active community collaborator and has worked with various nonprofits on Maui.

• Mickhaela Valite is a liberal arts student who aims to be a commercial architect. She wants to start a foundation in the Philippines to help those in need. She volunteers with local social service programs, helping feed and provide emotional support to the homeless, as well as mentoring children in her church.

The I.M. Ready program is part of the UH-Maui College International Center of Innovation and Research, which aims to bring the local and international community to the college as a hub of applied research and innovation and expand opportunities for both students and faculty for global engagement.

Tickets for the dinner are $200 per person. For more information and or to attend the dinner, contact Kit Zulueta by email at zulu@hawaii.edu, by phone at 984-3398 or through maui.hawaii.edu/imready.
