Maalaea man arrested after fleeing SUV crash
A 22-year-old Maalaea man was arrested after he crashed a stolen Toyota into a sport utility vehicle on Honoapiilani Highway and fled the scene Monday afternoon, police spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto said.
At 2:15 p.m. Monday, the man was driving a silver 2016 Toyota pickup toward Wailuku when he crossed left of center and struck a white 2006 Nissan SUV traveling in the opposite lane. The Toyota driver fled the scene, while the operator of the Nissan was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries considered not life-threatening.
Later, police discovered the Toyota was reported stolen, Okamoto said. They located the 22-year-old Toyota operator and arrested him on suspicion of stolen vehicle charges. Police released the man pending further investigation. They did not release the man’s name.
