Pro Surfers Ty Simpson-Kane (from foreground), Albee Layer, Paige Alms, Kai Lenny and Jesse Richman autograph new reusable water canteens for students at Haiku Elementary School on Friday afternoon. In an effort to eliminate single-use plastic bottles at the school, Torsten Durkan raised funds to purchase canteens for each of the school’s 485 students and to buy and have installed three water-filling stations. The stations dispense filtered water for bottles and have attached drinking fountains. Donors included the Rob Machado Foundation, Skyline Eco Adventures and Da Kine and Reef. Volunteers Laf Young and Ramana Sawyer installed the three filing stations. The ‘Ohana Health Plan, a WellCare Health Plans Inc. company, also recently installed a water-filling station at the school as part of the Hawaii 5210 Let’s Go! Program. The goal is to promote healthy living and eating in the schools.
