E-Cycling no longer taking microwaves

Microwave ovens will no longer be accepted in the Maui County E-Cycling program as of Feb. 20, the county department of Environmental Management announced Wednesday.

The department is attributing the decision to not accept microwave ovens to a shift in the worldwide recycling commodities market. In the future, only televisions and computers may be accepted for recycling, the department said.

Residents and businesses interested in recycling microwaves may take them to Hammerhead Metals Recycling in the Central Maui Baseyard off Mokulele Highway. There is a $5 fee; the number is 280-8844.

Microwave ovens may be disposed of at county landfills or transfer stations, the department said.

The Maui County Electronic Recycling Program is located at 901 Lower Main St. in Wailuku and is open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays.
