Grand castle in the sand

Scott Dodson and fiancee, Terri Robinson, of Cour d’Alene, Idaho, have a lot to show for eight hours of work at Kamaole I Beach Park in Kihei on Wednesday afternoon. While some of the sand sculptures Dodson makes back home are “off the beach” and made to last months and even years, Wednesday’s was built at the beach’s high-water mark. “This is just for fun,” he said. “When the tide hits, it will go down.” Dodson said he brought a trowel and other small tools from home but had to purchase a small spade here on Maui. Dodson said he learned to build sandcastles while growing up on Long Island, N.Y., and now has a business building them for conventions and corporate clients. His website,, features photos of 12-foot-tall castles that took him and a five-member crew five days to build.
