Keeping up with demand for Fat Tuesday

Home Maid Bakery Office Manager Amy Kozuki said nearly half of Tuesday’s customers were buying cream-filled malassadas. She said the recipe was started in the 1970s by current bakery President Jeremy Kozuki. “He played on a softball team, and he said for whoever hits a home run he would make cream-filled malassadas,” she said. “And that’s how it started.”

He said Home Maid was hoping to sell at least 900 dozen of the traditional Portuguese Fat Tuesday treats made from fried dough sprinkled liberally with sugar. Fat Tuesday precedes Ash Wednesday and Lent, which traditionally meant that practicing Catholics needed to use up all the lard and sugar in the house before the 40-day fast.
