Man charged with 2nd-degree robbery

An 18-year-old Wailuku man was arrested after he was identified as having grabbed a wallet from a man sitting on a table in front of a Wailuku restaurant Thursday morning, according to police.

Chad Kaohu was charged with second-degree robbery.

The robbery was reported at about 9 a.m. when Kaohu approached the man sitting in front of Jersey Mike’s Subs, according to an affidavit filed in court. While the man held his wallet in his right hand, Kaohu grabbed and twisted the man’s left wrist, then grabbed the wallet from the man’s right hand, the affidavit says.

Kaohu ran toward Maui Lani Safeway, where the man’s wallet was found on the ground with more than $300 in cash missing, police said.

Through investigation, Kaohu was identified as the suspect, police said. While police were searching for Kaohu at a Wailuku residence Thursday afternoon, he jumped out of a second-story bedroom window and tried to flee before he was arrested, police said.

After appearing in Wailuku District Court, Kaohu was released Tuesday pending a preliminary hearing next month.
