Man who died off Black Rock ID’d

A man who died Tuesday after being pulled from the ocean fronting the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa was identified as 74-year-old Yasuaki Tsuda of Tokyo, police said.

He was found floating facedown about 100 feet from shore on the south side of Black Rock before bystanders brought him to shore and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, fire officials said. Lahaina firefighters arrived on scene at 1:22 p.m. and continued efforts to revive the man.

The man was found holding or hanging onto a small inflatable plastic seat ring, often used by infants. He apparently was holding onto the item while swimming or lounging, fire officials said.

He was in critical condition when medics began transporting him by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center, officials said. He later died, officials said.

The death was the 12th ocean-related fatality on Maui this year.
