Firecrackers and lion dancing kicked off the Year of the Brown Earth Dog on Saturday at Maui Mall. For more than 20 years, the festival has been one of the county’s largest Chinese cultural events, with craft and food booths, a keiki Chinese attire contest, a cooking demonstration and tai chi and martial arts demonstrations. Mistress of ceremonies Alakai Paleka kept the action moving.

Included in the display were oranges and tangerines (symbolizing wealth and good fortune), lotus and watermelon seeds (for the generations to come), fresh fruit (life and new beginnings) and candy and sweets on a round tray to portray togetherness.
