Off-duty police officer arrested for DUI
An off-duty Maui police officer was arrested and charged Saturday with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, according to Maui Police Department spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto.
Mousa Kawas, 27, was released after posting $1,000 bail and receiving a court date, he said.
The arrest stemmed from a single-car accident reported at 2 a.m. Friday on South Kihei Road, Okamoto said. The driver of a Toyota truck struck a utility pole, and officers reported he appeared to be intoxicated. A male passenger was in the vehicle. Neither was injured.
The driver was identified as Kawas, who was part of the police recruit class that graduated in August.
A portion of South Kihei Road was closed for about 12 hours while crews replaced the utility pole, Okamoto said.
A criminal investigation is ongoing, and an internal investigation is pending, he said.
