Shutdown did not stop park business
A brief federal government shutdown early Friday did not affect Haleakala National Park’s regular services, park officials reported.
Trails remained open, and backcountry camping and cabin permits were issued.
However, unrelated to the shutdown, the 9,741-foot-elevation Haleakala Visitor Center will be closed after sunrise hours for ongoing door repairs and improvements. And, the Oheo pools in Kipahulu are closed while work continues to remove vegetation, loose debris and rocks likely to fall from the cliff face of Oheo Gulch.
The pools have been closed since Jan. 3, 2017, because of a rockslide that left a visitor with minor injuries.
