Tokyo man, 74, pulled from water

A 74-year-old man from Tokyo was pulled from the waters fronting the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa on Tuesday afternoon and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, Maui fire officials said.

The man was found floating facedown about 100 feet from shore on the south side of Black Rock, said Fire Services Chief Ed Taomoto. He was last seen wearing a child-type flotation device.

Bystanders brought him to shore and began CPR, he said.

Firefighters from Lahaina arrived on the scene at 1:22 p.m. and took over CPR, Taomoto said. Medics arrived shortly after.

They managed to regain a pulse and the man was transported to the hospital, he said.
