Applications for Lanai’s sheep hunting season available on March 19

The Maui News – Hunter applications for this year’s Lanai mouflon sheep hunting season will be available beginning March 19 at state Department of Land and Natural Resource Division of Forestry and Wildlife offices statewide.

Hunters also may apply online.

A $10 fee for each applicant must accompany an application for the hunt at the time of filing. Applications without fees attached won’t be processed and will be returned.

A tag fee will be assessed when hunters check in. Hawaii residents will be assessed $20, and nonresidents $125 for each sheep tag. No fee will be assessed for the non-typical ram tag.

Applicants must obtain and pay close attention to the hunt instruction sheet and addendum for any changes in the application process.

There will be four Lanai mouflon sheep season hunts this year:

• An archery-only hunt will be held over eight consecutive days beginning July 28 and ending Aug. 4.

• A youth hunt will be conducted for one weekend, Aug. 11 and 12.

• A muzzleloader hunt will be held for one weekend, Aug. 18 and 19.

• A general rifle hunt will be conducted over nine consecutive weekends, beginning Aug. 25 and ending Oct. 21.

Hunter assistants will be allowed to only accompany hunters who are 65 years or older, or disabled.

The bag limit for this year’s season will be three mouflon sheep: one of either gender, one ewe and one non-typical ram per hunter, per authorized hunt. Hunters will be required to purchase an either sex tag and have the option to purchase a ewe tag. State resource personnel have final say on a non-typical ram designation.

There will be no lottery drawing of permits conducted for the archery-only hunt and no limit on the number of archers who will be allowed to participate. However, interested archers must apply for a permit. Archery hunters will be allowed to apply for and participate in either the muzzleloader or general rifle hunt lotteries.

Applications for all hunts may be submitted in person or mailed to the Maui Division of Forestry and Wildlife office, 1955 Main St. Room 301, Wailuku 96793. Only Lanai residents may mail or deliver their applications to the Lanai division office at 917 Fraser Ave., P.O. Box 630661, Lanai City 96763.
