Pedestrian walking in traffic lane killed
A 48-year-old Haiku resident died Friday night after being struck while walking in the middle of the westbound lane of Hana Highway west of Haiku Road, Maui police reported Saturday.
The pedestrian was identified as Myves Manu Gould.
Gould was struck about 8:50 p.m. by the driver of a gold 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe multipurpose vehicle driven by a 35-year-old Washington state man, police said. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision happened on a rural, unlit stretch of highway, and Gould was wearing dark-colored clothing, police said.
The driver and his three passengers were uninjured. They were wearing seat belts, police said.
The pedestrian’s death remained under investigation Saturday afternoon.
The incident marked Maui County’s second traffic fatality this year, compared with one at the same time last year.
