Taking care of the aina

Maui United Junior Young Buddhist Association member Kai Okuni, 14, tries to get one last ride out of a toy bike Saturday morning before adding it to the pile of litter and trash gathered at Waiehu’s Leisure Estates Park during “A Day of Community” presented by Malama Maui Nui. Looking on are Sherri Okuni, Kaylie Okuni, 11, Robert Okuni and Diane Nako. Malama Maui Nui Program Director Rob Douglas said more than 100 people turned out to clean the park and nearby beach. “It’s a chance for people to connect with their community and neighbors while joining in stewardship of the aina,” Douglas said. “We’re so happy to see this mix of people.”
