Ualapue Shaft test: No E. coli

A resampling of water in the Ualapue Shaft in east Molokai on Wednesday showed no E.coli bacteria, a day after a test came back positive, said the county Department of Water Supply.

Though a test Tuesday showed the presence in the shaft of the bacteria, which could indicate contamination by human and animal waste, the department declared the water from the well safe to drink. The water in the source and in the water lines was not contaminated.

The resampled water has been confirmed to meet federal Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Health water quality standards. It does not contain any trace of E. coli contamination.
