PetersenDean buys second Maui company

The Maui News

PetersenDean Hawaii LLC, which purchased Haleakala Solar in March, has bought another longtime island company, Maui Roofing Inc.

PetersenDean, based in Fremont, Calif., said Tuesday that buying the Kihei-based company was a “strategic purchase” that will add a roofing component to the company’s photovoltaic thermal water heating, solar energy and battery storage installations.

“Maui Roofing fits right into the PD and Haleakala (Solar) wheelhouse, given their ‘gold standard’ reputation for quality and service,” Jim Petersen, vice president of PetersenDean Hawaii, said in the company news release.

He said that the company plans to begin selling roofs in May statewide and that the purchase “will accelerate the process” of installing more than 1,000 new roofs in Hawaii in fiscal year 2018-19.

Maui Roofing, owned by Tim Leist, has been installing roofs for homes and businesses for more than three decades, according to its website. Leist said that he and Petersen “come from a like-minded approach to installing high-end roofs and putting the customer first.”

“We have both been in this industry for decades, weathering the ups and downs with honesty and hard work,” Leist said.

Leist will continue with the new company, transitioning “to a development role . . . focusing on expanding roofing to the remaining islands,” the PetersenDean news release said.

Terms of the acquisition were not announced.

This acquisition is the second in Hawaii this year for PetersenDean, following the purchase of Haleakala Solar last month. A news release from PetersenDean announcing the acquisition in early March said that Jim Whitcomb, founder of Haleakala Solar, approached Petersen about the purchase. Petersen also is the CEO and president of the privately held PetersenDean Roofing & Solar.

PetersenDean, founded in 1984 by Petersen, specializes in new residential and commercial construction, the news release said. The company employs 3,000 workers in eight states — Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas and Hawaii.

Gary Liardon, president of the consumer division of PetersenDean, is heading up the Maui transitions as well as the other acquisitions planned across the United States this year.

“We are excited to add the Maui Roofing team to the ranks,” he said.
