Tree trimmer shocked in Kihei, declines medical treatment

Maui News

A hired tree trimmer was shocked Thursday afternoon at a residence in Kihei when a coconut frond being removed fell and made contact with a nearby power line, according to Shayna Decker, Maui Electric Co. spokeswoman.

A MECO crew and emergency first responders were called to the scene, but the tree trimmer declined medical treatment, she said.

The utility urges people to stay at least 10 feet away from power lines when setting up ladders or other equipment, she said. Homeowners should hire certified tree trimmers to handle trees in close proximity to power lines.

Before conducting work near utility lines, customers can call Maui Electric at 871-7777 for inspections.
