Two ocean rescues covered in Napili

Lifeguards and firefighters rescued two stand-up paddleboarders and two snorkelers who were caught in gusty trade winds off Napili Bay on Sunday, a fire official said.

Responding to an 11:13 a.m. call about the paddleboarders having trouble getting back to shore, lifeguards on rescue watercraft spotted the paddleboarders along with two snorkelers about 150 yards offshore and brought the four men safely back to the beach, said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto.

The stand-up paddleboarders, who were visiting from Wyoming, had gone out from Napili Bay and were blown offshore by winds of more than 25 mph, Taomoto said. One man was in his 60s and the other in his 30s.

The snorkelers, who were in their 30s and also from Wyoming, had snorkel gear and fins, and they couldn’t make headway against the gusty trade winds, Taomoto said.

The four men had gone to the beach together, he said.

Lifeguards from D.T. Fleming Beach Park and Napili firefighters responded.
