Second photo: Derek and Julie Smith share a laugh Friday evening with campers in the dining hall at Camp Pilialoha O Maui. The founders celebrated their fifth annual camp, which helps children whose parents are incarcerated. The camp welcomed its most youths ever with 136 keiki 7 to 17 years old, including nine from Molokai. “In recent years, we’ve gotten a better relationship between the parents and kids,” Julie Smith said. “The kids still have that hope and prayer for their parents, and you can see it everywhere.”
