Kihei man arrested for moped thefts

Police arrested a Kihei man last week after he was seen driving two stolen mopeds in Kihei.

August Zilisch, 32, was charged with two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and disobedience to police officers. His bail was set at $11,000.

At 11:15 p.m. May 18, a police officer recognized Zilisch as the man who was on his cellphone while operating a black moped that sped away as the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, according to a declaration filed in court. Zilisch jumped off the moped and ran and wasn’t located that night, the declaration says.

He was arrested the morning of May 24 when he was seen operating another stolen moped on Piilani Highway, according to police. The moped had been reported stolen May 20 from the parking lot of Pacific Shores in Kihei.
