Lending a hand for Big Island neighbors

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo

Jen Mather (from left), Joe Tolbe and Tiare Lawrence fill a box with donated sleeping bags Saturday in the Kahului Shopping Center parking lot fronting Kaahumanu Avenue. They were part of a Kokua Puna crew collecting donations for Big Island residents displaced by the ongoing volcanic eruption. They said Maui residents stepped up to help fellow Neighbor Islanders with a wide assortment of nonperishable items that included bedding, hygiene supplies, water, camping gear, extension cords, dust masks, duct tape, batteries, lanterns, coolers and pet food. The group said it planned to collect supplies and load them into a container from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Organizer Mahina Martin said Goodfellow Bros. donated the money to pay for the container’s shipping. She said the goods would be distributed on the Big Island by the nonprofit, Food Basket Hawaii Inc.
