4-part class is intro to ki-aikido

An introductory course in ki-aikido, a Japanese martial art based on Zen principles and teaching practical self-defense with a peaceful mindset, will be offered on four consecutive Thursday evenings in June starting June 7.

The course will take place at the Shunshinkan Dojo, 194 S. Market St. in Wailuku from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will introduce all aspects of ki-aikido practice.

The fee of $40 includes the training manual “Ki-Aikido on Maui” and can be applied to the first dues for participants wishing to join after completion of the course. The instructor will be 6th dan Tracy Reasoner under the guidance of Christopher Curtis, head instructor of Maui Ki-Aikido and chief instructor of Hawaii Ki Federation.

Soup sale to fund scholarships

The Portuguese Association of Maui will sell its signature Portuguese bean soup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Heritage Hall, 401 Baldwin Ave. in Paia. Quarts of soup will sell for $10 each. Proceeds benefit the association’s scholarship fund.

On July 8, the association will award $3,000 in scholarships to three Maui scholars. Since 2003, the 36-member group has given $44,500 in scholarships to 47 Maui residents.

Obon season begins in Lahaina

The first obon of the season will take place at Lahaina Shingon Mission on Saturday with a church service at 6:30 p.m. followed by dancing at 7:30. There will be food concessions, shave ice and cold drinks available. The community is invited. For more information, call 661-0466.

Donations to help volcano victims

The National Junior Basketball League, Maui Chapter — Upcountry Hoops is conducting a donation drive to help people who have been adversely affected by the Kilauea lava flow in the Puna area of the Big Island. In addition to monetary donations, Upcountry Hoops will accept non-perishable food items, bottled water, disposable diapers, toiletries, paper goods, feminine hygiene items, clean linen and small transistor radios.
