A hot summer day

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo

Gentle waves lap the shore at Kanaha Beach Park on Thursday, the first day of summer. The summer heat has arrived as well, with a high temperature of 89 degrees Friday at Kahului Airport. With humidity levels of 55 percent, the heat index (what conditions really feel like), was 93 degrees. The record temperature for the day was 91 degrees set in 1980. The forecast for today calls for mostly cloudy skies with showers likely over windward areas and partly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers over leeward areas. High temperatures are expected to be 83 to 88 degrees with lows between 71 and 76 degrees. Breezy trade winds should blow between 15 and 25 mph, the National Weather Service said.
