Brush fire threatens homes in Pukalani
A brush fire in Pukalani came within 20 feet of homes before firefighters were able to contain and douse the blaze Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials.
Maui Fire Department engines from Makawao and Kula, a Kahului tanker and a battalion chief responded to the 2:40 p.m. call of a brush fire in the gulch adjacent to Aina Lani Drive, said Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a half-acre of brush burning on the north slope of the gulch and coming within 20 feet of homes on Aina Lani Drive, he said.
The Fire Department’s Air One helicopter was dispatched to battle the blaze that was difficult to access due to steep terrain, he said.
The fire was contained at 4:30 p.m., Yatsushiro said.
There were no injuries or property damage reported. The cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.
