Kula man, 68, pulled from ocean

A man was taken to the hospital in critical condition Saturday after being found unresponsive in the waters off West Maui, according to Maui Fire Department spokesman Ed Taomoto.

At 6:28 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders received a call about a man being pulled unresponsive from the ocean just north of Ukumehame Beach Park. The 68-year-old man from Kula apparently had been surfing when he was spotted unresponsive about 40 yards from shore. Bystanders went out and brought the man back to the beach.

Off-duty paramedics, firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard personnel happened to be on scene and started CPR as soon as the man was brought back to the beach, Taomoto said. Paramedics from Maalaea and Napili arrived at 6:38 p.m., followed by a Lahaina fire crew at 6:43 p.m.

Lifesaving efforts revived the man, and at 7 p.m. he was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

The man’s status was unknown as of Monday.
